Listen When It Whispers: What Your Body Is Trying to Tell You
“If you listen to your body when it whispers, you won’t have to hear it scream.” – Unknown
There’s a quiet wisdom in the body—one we’re often too busy, distracted, or overwhelmed to hear.
We power through stress.
We override fatigue.
We ignore the tension in our chest, the knot in our stomach, the lump in our throat.
Until the body stops whispering… and starts to scream.
That scream might look like burnout, anxiety, chronic pain, insomnia, irritability, or a complete loss of motivation. Often, by the time we reach that point, we realise we’ve been ignoring the signals for quite a while.
Your Body Is Not the Problem
It’s the messenger.
The tight shoulders, the racing heart, the heaviness in your limbs—they’re not just “symptoms to fix.” They’re signs that something deeper is asking for your attention.
Your body speaks in subtle language.
It nudges you with fatigue when you’re running on empty.
It gives you butterflies—or dread—in response to something not aligned.
It gives you a sense of calm or energy when something is right for you.
The challenge? We’ve often been taught to tune it out.
To think harder, push through, “get on with it.”
But real change—lasting, grounded change—often starts by slowing down enough to listen.
Many of the conversations I have with clients come back to a common thread: not putting themselves first. They’re juggling multiple roles—parent, partner, leader, colleague, caregiver—and often pushing through, even when their bodies are asking for rest or attention. I’m not immune to it either. I’ve caught myself doing the same—ignoring hunger, putting off drinking water, or saying “I’ll go to the loo after this one last thing.” It’s so human. We override the body’s whispers in the name of productivity, responsibility, or simply habit. But over time, this disconnect adds up. We become exhausted, resentful, or disconnected from what we truly need. The body doesn’t stop speaking—it just gets louder until we’re forced to listen.
The good news is that learning to listen—truly listen—to your body’s whispers is a skill you can cultivate. It starts with small moments of self-compassion: pausing to breathe, honouring a need for rest, or simply checking in with yourself throughout the day. What might happen if, instead of pushing through, you gave yourself permission to slow down and respond?
This is where coaching—in any form—can be incredibly powerful. It offers a space to pause, reflect, and really listen—to your thoughts, your patterns, and the quiet signals your body has been sending. Often, we try to think our way out of stuckness or burnout, when what we really need is space to reconnect with ourselves more fully. Coaching creates a supportive space for this kind of exploration, helping you reconnect with your body’s wisdom and build habits that nurture your wellbeing—long before the body feels the need to scream. A good coaching conversation brings together curiosity, clarity, and compassion. It helps you tune in to what’s true for you, so you can respond—not just react—to what’s going on in your inner and outer world.
Combining walking with coaching.
When we walk and talk, something shifts.
Out in nature, moving gently side by side, the nervous system begins to settle. Thoughts untangle. Breathing deepens. And often, the whispers of the body become clearer.
Clients often say things like:
“I didn’t even know I felt that way until I said it out loud on that walk.”
“It was like my body knew before my mind caught up.”
“It felt like the pace of walking helped me hear myself.”
Walking coaching allows space for the body and mind to reconnect.
It’s not just about insight—it’s about integration.
You’re not just talking about change—you’re embodying it, step by step.
Signs You Might Be Ignoring the Whispers
Here are a few quiet cues the body gives when it’s asking for attention:
- Constant tiredness, even after rest
- Difficulty focusing or making decisions
- A sense of dread or heaviness when facing something in your life
- Tension that won’t go away
- Feeling flat, unmotivated, or disconnected
- A quiet knowing that something isn’t working—but not being sure what or why
These are whispers. You don’t need to wait for them to become screams.
What Might Happen If You Did Listen?
What might shift if you allowed yourself to pause?
To take a moment.
To reflect.
To reconnect with what your body already knows.
To follow those small nudges before they become big, urgent calls for help.
Often, it’s in the space between steps, in the quiet between words, that the most meaningful insights arise.
